Meat Pie

This post is dedicated to Nike Royal , It is inspired by Ms Titi

The most import thing about meat pie for me is the filling, If you don't have ample time, you can buy already mixed pastry dough(puff pastry) from the store  
For the Dough
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup semolina flour (optional) *this makes the dough crumbly**
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup warm water plus more as needed

For the Filling
2 cups lean ground beef
11/2 cups cooked potatoes
1 cup mixed vegetable or green pees
1tsp cumin
1/2 tsp curry
1/2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
1/4 cup red onion (chopped)
1 Tspn canola oil
2 table spoons dried cranberry (optional)
1 bullion cube
salt to taste

*The process looks so long and cumbersome, I promise it will only take you like an hour**

My version: I use sunflower oil instead of butter for my dough and it comes out 'crumbier'
Again, I use Aromat seasoning instead of Salt.

I havent tried cranberries with it before. Interesting - Does it give it a different taste?

@Olori... The sausage roll just has fresh store bought sausage (uncooked). nothing too fancy. you can actually use the meat pie filling as well.

@Nijamum...lol @PHD.. I wish nh. LOL. Sunflower oil.. waoo! I av actually never thought of that, it's a lot healthier than butter.I will definitely try it the next time I make some.
Cranberries give a surprise sweet taste to the filling.

OMG! I officially love you. After seeing the puff puff recipe (my friend makes those for me, so i'm good on that one), i was going to ask for the meat pie recipe and voila, you read my mind.

I have a date with this meat pie after my exams next week. I'm so excited.

I made meat pie last week!Yum Yum ;-) I really want to make sausage rolls though...do you take the sausage meat out of its casing(the edible film thing that holds the sausage together) or do you leave it as it is then just wrap the pastry round it?

@Pretty Lashes, no you don't need to take out the wrap around the sausage. and yeah, u just wrap the dough around it.

@9jaFoodie thank you thank you, I recently discovered titi's blogs too.....The meat pie looks good, good picture presentation as usual....the cranberry in the filling is something different...guess that will give it a sweeter taste.

I love your recipes and I have been able to follow some of them. I want to know, how do you store meat pies? Do you refrigerate them or store in a cool dry place?

I think the best way to store precooked meat pie is to freeze it, if you leave it in the fridge there is a tendency for it to get dry. You cant leave it out because it has meat in it.
My best trick is to only make what i need, you can pre-make the dough and leave it in d fridge, freeze the meat. when you need a little more, roll out some pre-made dough.
But the best way to store pre-made once is to freeze them, thaw and reheat in the over.

Well, I have to make A Whole Bunch of these for my middle schooler's classroom, they've been studying Nigeria, and I did have a question. What's with the cranberries? Are they to replace a local ingredient unavailable in the rest of the world.

He's pretty excited to be bringing these to class!
